Open development

Built in the open, reviewable by anyone.

XimosKid's core service code is built in the open and published publicly — so anyone can review what it actually does, not just what we say it does. We believe that being reviewable by anyone is the foundation of trust.

Whether you're a parent, a researcher, or a curious developer, you can inspect the source code, verify our claims, and contribute to making Ximos better.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Ximos and XimosKid?

Ximos is the parent-facing app and web dashboard used to view streams, manage settings, access the Cloud Media Vault, and trigger remote live location tracking. XimosKid is installed on the child's device and runs the monitoring service itself.

Will my child know XimosKid is installed?

By default, yes — XimosKid appears under its own name in the app list, and a persistent, non-dismissable notification runs whenever monitoring is active. A parent can optionally hide the launcher icon; the notification still remains. See the full policy on the Trust Center page.

Can XimosKid be uninstalled by the child?

Yes, through normal Android settings. A parent PIN is required first, to prevent accidental or impulsive removal — this is not a Device Admin block, and does not lock the device or erase data.

How does the pay-as-you-go billing work?

New accounts get 720 free bonus seconds and 250MB of cloud storage, refreshing every 19 days with no cap on how many times it resets. The three stream features — Screen Mirror, Camera View Cast, and Surrounding Audio Listening — draw interchangeably from free bonus seconds or purchased balance. Camera View Cast requires a minimum of 400 free seconds (changeable) or any positive balance to start.

Everything else — Location Tracking, Usage Monitor, Photo/Video Capture, Notification, Smart Alert, OnScreen Notify, Clipboard, Open App, Action URL — is unlimited and free.

Additional stream seconds can be earned by watching reward ads (up to 50–60 credits/day) or by referrals (420s per referral, up to 5,000s), or purchased with a minimum $1 crypto top-up. Purchased balance never expires; only the free bonus resets.

Is this free to use forever?

Yes. The three stream features can run entirely on the free 720 seconds granted every 19 days, or on seconds earned by watching reward ads and referring friends — no payment required, unlimited use. If you run out, you can top up any time from $1. All non-stream features are unlimited and free.

Does Ximos support remote live location tracking?

Yes — live location tracking is shipped as of v1.0.5. The parent triggers a fetch from the Ximos app or dashboard; the kid device returns location through a multi-stage fetch with automatic fallback:

1. Fused GPS fresh — 3–20 m
2. Fused GPS cached — varies
3. Network Provider (Wi-Fi + Cell tower) — 20–100 m
4. Last-known from any provider — varies
5. IP-based (city-level, last resort) — 5–50 km

GPS auto-enables on the kid device via the Accessibility Service (multi-language dialog auto-accept). Location is displayed on a free OpenStreetMap-based map with three switchable styles — Street, Satellite, and OSM — with no Google Maps API key required. A one-tap "Open in Google Maps" button jumps directly to the native Google Maps app. The most recent location is cached locally for instant paint on open. Full details on the Docs page.

What can a parent do during a screen mirroring or camera session?

During screen mirroring, a parent has full remote touch control — click, swipe, and gesture — plus a toolbox with Smart Alert popups, OnScreen Notify messages, Open App, Send Link, and clipboard send.

During camera casting, a parent can flip between front and rear camera, toggle the flashlight, and use the new Smart Zoom (6-step percentage slider with per-device capability detection) and Smart Focus (tap-to-focus + soft focus lock) — all commanded over a low-latency WebRTC Data Channel (50–150 ms).

Surrounding Audio Listening is a separate standalone feature that can run on its own — a one-way live ambient audio stream with 5-tier adaptive bitrate, music-channel routing, and its own dedicated UI. Full breakdown on the Docs page.

Does Ximos block apps or filter web and video content?

No, not currently — this is a deliberate design choice. Ximos gives parents visibility (usage reports, screen time, alerts, live location) and a way to communicate with the child device directly, rather than remote app blocking or content filtering. Optional app blocking and keyword/content filtering are being explored for a future update; see the Roadmap.

Transparency report

We intend to publish a periodic summary of security incidents, abuse reports, account removals, and vulnerability disclosures here as the user base grows to a point where these numbers are meaningful. As a young project, our first report will follow after the first full reporting period.

No incidents to report for this period — this section will update going forward.

Contributing

Ximos is a small, independently-run project. Bug reports, documentation fixes, and security review are the most useful contributions right now — open an issue on GitHub or email us directly, whichever's easier. If you're a security researcher, please see the disclosure guidelines on the Trust Center (disclosure policy) before filing a public issue for anything sensitive.
